My name is Surajit Ray. I have started a venture called Rare Indian Art. In the past I have studied Biotechnology (IIT) and then subsequently worked for a French company called Schlumberger. I have since the last two years made the best effort I could, in getting folk and tribal artists of India a foot hold in the internet domain.
The folk and tribal art forms in India need the help of the urban Indian to make it to the next generation. Being an artist myself I have decided to take our art and tradition to a wider audience.
I have opened an outlet in Dwarka to familiarize people with folk art forms of India. I have also got a website made called www.rareindianart.com. Through this website we want to bring the artists closer to their customers. On this website you will eventually find – the most exhaustive knowledgebase of Indian handicrafts. We are uploading information about the Artists and their lives. We also have information about the art forms and any news about them. We also invite user participation in making custom and innovative art.
Behind all this I believe is what lies the best of our culture. Our immense tradition. A history – where culture overshadowed all the turmoil in our minds. Our folk art is a symbol of our free spirit in the face of countless agressors. It has survived the worst of human civilizations.
However in our prosperous present we seemed to have lost touch with it. We know it only as beautiful handcrafted objects to be displayed within the confines of our houses. The entire wealth of history almost never gets passed on. I would like to change that. I would like to make art intergral to our lives in more ways than just displaying objects. I have designed the site and the venture, keeping in mind that, at all times information about the art, it’s artist and it’s history – form one complete story in the mind of the user. Maybe one day users will like it enough to carry on the tradition themselves !!
I would also like to know if we can somehow help each other in getting our traditional art out in the open.

Sorry, but I’m going with “Suro” since we’ve known each other for quite some time. Although we’ve not formally met I know you from the days of muscles and motorbikes in the streets of Kharagpur. The days of Lallu and common bathrooms with trees growing through them. All perfectly designed for footy in the undy with sweaty, techie wingies. No, I am surprisingly not an IITian, but a friend, nonetheless. We really should have met by now but we have not. Regardless, I know of you and about you from a common friend we have. I’m sure you know from the name above, who I am (if not, you can ponder some more). I just wanted to say I like the blog thus far. I’ll come back to it so don’t procrastinate. We must meet in person and wax nostalgic about all that time that we knew of each other but never really met. Something well-aged and Scottish would be a welcome addition to our group. Jokes aside, this is a good read so keep at it man. All the best for 2009!
